Melatonin for Hair Loss: Benefits and Harms

    05/12/2021

Our hair, which is the crown of our head, can be a problem for us from time to time. As soon as we realize that our hair is starting to fall out heavily, we are looking for methods that can cure our problem. The good thing is that today we can find many resources to stop hair loss and protect hair health. Experimental studies of scientists in this field; Their transformation into robust solution techniques and methods, combined with rapidly and continuously renewed technological developments, shows that we are not so helpless. Hair loss problem; The fact that it has a wide scale in terms of causes and triggering factors causes us to encounter different or constantly renewed treatment methods and application techniques. Sometimes the solution to the problem can come from an unexpected place. We can say that the hormone melatonin is one of the best examples of this. Many experimental studies have been conducted to show that the hormone melatonin has positive effects on hair loss as well as in the treatment of insomnia. If you wish, let’s get to know melatonin a little bit first.

What Is Melatonin? What Does It Do?

Melatonin is a hormone used to treat insomnia and secreted by the pineal gland at night. It is used as a drug supplement to eliminate sleep disorders that may occur due to time differences and alternating work practices. Due to its secretion at night, melatonin has been given the title of “hormone of darkness”. Being a strong antioxidant, it is very important for body health. By strengthening the immune system, it supports our body against annoying diseases such as cancer.

So, can this hormone that we associate with sleep prevent our hair loss?

How Does Melatonin Promote Hair Growth?

The hormone melatonin does not like the sun, that is, it does not like the light. This is the reason why we try to put children to sleep in a dark environment. Less melatonin is secreted in summer. Seasonal hair loss occurs due to the transition of hair to other phases before completing the anagen phase. But what does this have to do with melatonin? It is thought that the hormone melatonin affects the anagen phase, which is the formation and development phase of hair.

We cannot say that melatonin deficiency causes hair loss, but eliminating this deficiency in seasonal hair loss can prevent seasonal hair loss by prolonging the anagen phase.

What Are the Symptoms of Melatonin Deficiency?

The lack of melatonin in the body is so important that it can be the cause of many diseases that need treatment. We can list the symptoms that suggest melatonin deficiency as follows:

    • sleep disorder
    • Depression
    • anxiety disorder
    • Unrest
    • Weakness and fatigue
    • Palpitation
      How to Increase Melatonin Level?

You can try a few natural methods to increase melatonin levels both to avoid the negative effects of melatonin deficiency and to support the hair loss treatment process.

    Take a Melatonin Supplement
Although melatonin supplements are mainly used by people with insomnia, it is also considered a useful supplement in cases where there is no sleep problem. It can be started with a low dose, but of course with the advice of a doctor…

    Avoid Artificial Lighting
Natural light sources should be used as much as possible. Although it is not very possible; You should keep as much distance between you and electronic devices as possible. It will be useful to take a break from activities made with television, computer, mobile phone. For activities such as reading and writing, you can choose table lamps that emit low light.

    Consume Melatonin-Rich Foods
You can supplement the naturally produced melatonin in our body from the outside, and make room for foods containing melatonin in your diet. Here are some of the foods containing melatonin that you can consume during the day:

    • Sour cherry
    • Banana
    • Pineapple
    • Tomatoes
    • Oat
    • Dairy products
    • Salmon
    • Egg
    • white rice
As a result, our hormones decide the fate of our hair, as they do with many things related to our health. Disruption of hormonal balance can result in heavy hair loss. We can include melatonin in the category of benevolent hormones in terms of supporting the formation of new hair, and we can make an effort to maintain their existence. Because their absence can be a problem!
